May Market Background
In May of 1926, the Club organized a Plant Exchange for members that evolved into the annual May Market plant sale that is open to the public, usually scheduled for the day before Mother’s Day.
Although today’s May Market is much broader in scope than the original, most of the perennials offered for sale are still, as then, donated from members’ gardens. Also offered for sale are potted herbs, potted annuals, and cut flower arrangements created by members from their own garden. A tag sale and a silent auction are included as well as the sale of garden related items such as floral note cards or gardening gloves. A Café features homemade soups and baked goods.
May Market is an event attended not only by the Shippan community but also those in Stamford and nearby areas.
